AL NINÓ BLOWS FIVE STARS PAST NEW ZEALAND

June 14, 2009

RUSTENBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – Fernando Torres scored a scintillating hat trick inside 17 minutes as world number one Spain breezed past the All Whites 5-0 in their FIFA Confederations Cup opener in Rustenburg on Monday morning (NZT).
The $50 million Liverpool striker – nicknamed El Niño – scored in the 6th, 14th and 17th minutes to rock the All Whites while Arsenal playmaker Cesc Fabregas grabbed a fourth in the 24th minute to cap a destructive opening from the tournament favourites.
A re-jigged All Whites – with Jeremy Christie brought on to help solidify the midfield – stemmed the red tide until half time, but an unfortunate mis-kick from Andy Boyens allowed David Villa in for Spain’s fifth three minutes after the break.
The win extends Spain’s unbeaten streak to 33, just two shy of the world record. With 30 of those 33, including the last 13, resulting in victories for La Roja, Spain are short priced favourites to equal the record by the end of group play and may face a chance to break it against current holders Brazil in the semi finals.
New Zealand must take at least a point off South Africa – who earlier played out an uninspiring goalless draw with Iraq – to keep their hopes of making the semi finals alive, and All Whites captain Tim Brown was adamant the side would have no problem picking themselves up for the showdown on Thursday morning (NZT).
“I still think we have something to contribute to this tournament and I still think there’s the opportunity to cause some surprises against South Africa and Iraq,” Brown said.
“We’re not going to forget everything [about the game] because firstly, we can learn from our mistakes and secondly we take some positives form the second half because there I think there were some.”
Coach Ricki Herbert was similarly upbeat about the side’s chances of getting New Zealand’s first point, or win, at a Confederations Cup.
“The players will take [the loss] on the chin. We’re not surprised by the Spanish performance. In one way it’s fantastic to get these opportunities but on the flipside it’s always going to be tough for us. But we’ve got too big games coming up and with the earlier draw between South Africa and Iraq this result doesn’t do too much damage to the group yet.”
“We’ve got a disappointed group of players but it’s a new day tomorrow and we’ll bounce back. We’ll need to turn the disappointment round quickly we’ll need to as we face a tough game against the hosts next up.”
After five minutes of Arsenal playmaker Cesc Fabregas took advantage of a stretched New Zealand defence to feed Torres on the edge of the box, who turned and bent a right foot shot past Glen Moss into top right corner.
Amidst a scintillating and devastating showcase of crisp passing and swift movement, Spain conjured up the goal of the game eight minutes later with a series of angled defence-twisting passes leading to Torres netting his second six yards out.
To complete his hat trick, Torres met Juan Capdevilla’s left wing cross with a bullet header, while Capdevilla also laid on Fabregas’s goal after Riera slipped a pass through the All Whites defence.
The All Whites finished the first half at the right end of the pitch with David Mulligan’s free kick keeping Iker Casillas honest while Chris Killen was off target with a header from the ensuing corner.
But Torres once again got in behind New Zealand on the flank and when his innocuous pass across goal eluded Boyens, Villa was on hand to tuck away Spain’s fifth and final goal.
New Zealand enjoyed more possession in the second spell and while Chris Killen and Shane Smeltz looked to be settling into the combination that Ricki Herbert had waited for in attack, there was little change out a Spanish outfit that was clinical in all areas.

CONFEDERATIONS CUP: AFTER DEFEATED AGAINST TANZANIA AND ITALY, NEW ZEALAND TO PLAY WITH EUROPEAN'S CHAMPION SPAIN TODAY

Spain National Team European Champions
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New Zealand Oceania Champions
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RUSTENBURG, SOUTH AFRICA –

The All Whites are under no illusions that their FIFA Confederations Cup opener against world number one Spain in Rustenburg on Monday morning (NZT) is a different proposition entirely from their heart-breaking defeat to Italy.
The All Whites have played World Cup winners like Italy before but never have they faced an even tougher proposition, like a rampant Spain, in their very next match and in their opening game of an international tournament.
The European champions are gunning to lift their first ever FIFA trophy and arrived in South Africa boasting a two-year, 32-match unbeaten streak that is fast approaching Brazil’s world record 35-matches without defeat between 1993 and 1996.
All Whites coach Ricki Herbert is acutely aware of Spain’s pedigree.
“I think what we’ve seen from Spain since they were crowned European Champions has been that they’ve gone on and comprehensively beaten all the other big nations in the world. It’s a big task against a fantastic team. It could be a tough night,” Herbert said.
Ranked a full 81 places below the Spanish, New Zealand enter the match as rank outsiders but after a attention-grabbing performance in the 3-4 defeat to Italy, Herbert is keen to put in a strong effort to take some momentum into their remaining two matches in Group A.
“I think our focus is on South Africa and Iraq in terms of what we can get from this tournament, but it’s important we address this game in the best way we possibly can with the right focus, and I think the Italian game stands us in good stead to do that. I think we go into this game a little more confident than we would’ve been.”
All Whites midfielder Simon Elliott said that while the chance to play Italy was special, a competitive match against Spain would require even greater effort.
“It’s a very different game. Italy had just arrived and still getting settled. Spain will be ready and they’ll be a lot tougher. It’s their first game of the tournament and they’ll be looking to impress. They’re European champions and massive favourites obviously.”
“For our part, we have to try and build on what we did on Wednesday night and raise our level of performance. Whether that leads to points on the board or goals in the net, I don’t know, but there will still be a lot of things we can take out of the game regardless of the result.”
The match kicks of at 6.30am Sunday (NZT) with live coverage on Sky Sport 3 from 6am.
Hosts South Africa get the eight team ‘mini World Cup’ underway with a clash against Asian champions Iraq in Johannesburg at 2am (NZT).

The final will be played between hosts South Africa and Nigeria at the same venue today. The Tanzanian boys, who had a rollercoaster show to end preliminaries with five matches unbeaten run, had their title retention bid in disarray after losing to Nigeria by 2-1 goals in the semifinal tie played on Wednesday.Otherwise, Tanzania beat Ethiopia 5-0, Africa Invite 4-2, Malawi 1-0 and Namibia 3-1 before drawing 1-1 with Kenya in their final group stage match.Head coach Rodrigo Stockler, who trained the team barely for two weeks, said his boys worked above the call of duty to beat Malawi in a rain-soaked pitch and emerge victorious.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) in collaboration with the government has invited European and South American teams to lock horns with the national team, Taifa Stars. Deputy Minister of Information, Sports and Culture Joel Bendera, named Italy and Brazil as the most likely teams to test Taifa Stars. Bendera said the TFF has already requested international friendly matches with the highly ranked teams in the world. According to him, the coming of such teams would give the Taifa Stars players maximum exposure and promote the ultramodern National Stadium. He cited the recent Vancouver Whitecaps tour as one of the most successful tours in Tanzanian soccer. "Our stadium has world class qualities, thus we have to promote it to become one of the 2010 World Cup's training venues," said Bendera. The minister pointed out that they were working relentlessly to make sure the 60,000-seater National Stadium becomes popular all over the world. Bendera also urged local clubs to strengthen their teams so that the national team gets well-trained players. "If our teams are weak then having a strong national team becomes a pipedream," he said. "They have to establish youth academies from which talented youngster will blossom,"the minister added. Meanwhile, the world soccer governing body (Fifa) has threatened to take strict measures against all players who used energy stimulants. Disclosing this warning, TFF president Leodgar Tenga, said the players who used cannabis and other prohibited drugs would soon be punished. "I urge all players in the country to avoid such drugsthey dont help in this world of science and technology," he said. "No club will be interested to buy a drug user, so if they want to have glittering soccer careers they should avoid the drugs," the president advised. However, the TFF official said there was no single Tanzanian player tested drug positive. He urged the respective clubs to monitor their players and punish those who would be caught smoking bhang.

PRETORIA, 10 June 2009 - The first batch of South Africa ends with a success on the New Zealand 4-3.

Bizarre race for development - with the Blues for three times at a disadvantage and defensive amnesia diffuse, producing an unusual result. Lippi head elevation of Pretoria, the rainy weather, and awaiting dell'esordio with the U.S. on Monday in Confederations Cup, against an opponent who wants to giocarsela, the second lines, several of which are in the 1 '. Replies results. Quagliarella and Pepe well as a man of the passage, but especially well Gilardino - who is played with Toni from the mesh holder - and replaced Iaquinta.

Both authors of a doppetta, a goal that avoid scivolone innocuous as wasteful. headache - one that puts the blues into trouble. But it is not migraine, but high altitude sickness. But to Pretoria, more than a thousand meters, but the attackers "all blacks". Whether we pulled twice placed by soccer, climbing up and pierce an Amelia unconvincing. The networks carry the signatures of Smeltz and Killen, two carneadi. just friendly - will be the charm of the challenge to world champions, or the type of football and the New Zealand practice, that is a physical game, done more than that rate of technical quality. However the All Blacks is that they give us pleasure (for their fans, sometimes less for the shins of our players).

No discounts, then, even though the first official race for the team Lippi, in Confederations, it is still early. Healthy and competitive race for the team of Herbert, and the Azzurri struggle to find answers. Gattuso, re-master, try to play the position, but the maneuver - in the absence of Pirlo and De Rossi - is unconvincing. The most dangerous of our Gilardino are, marking head on pretty assist from left to Quagliarella, while the most dynamic in the game is Pepe, tilting to the right. The Gila marks the head provisional 1-2. Then at the end of his time yet, and even the head, will rise to 2-2, yet at the invitation of Quagliarella.

Alberto Gilardino, a sign twice. Reuters super gila - The Italy equalized again, to start shooting. Again with Gilardino, head, again a cross from the left, this time aimed to Quagliarella: 2-2. With the two attackers who demonstrate a good understanding. I gol di Gilardino become blue in 12th In the meantime, Lippi replaced with Rossi Pirlo. Italy passes with Rossi from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3 with trequartista the Wee mezzosinistro. AMELIA tablet - What up with a serataccia, accomplices on the ground and the ball slippery for the rain. The vice Buffon, who already quite flawless during the first two goals, Killen extends in area. The attacker completes the disc by two staff: 3-2.

Changes of mass - in fifteen minutes of the resumption Lippi change much. Gattuso out, Pepe, Gilardino and Quagliarella inside and in their place, respectively Montolivo, Camoranesi, Toni and Iaquinta. The Italy it's better. ALSO Iaquinta - that marks his third goal in blue with a right-sized, capitalizing an assist with the counter of a Pirlo, who has ordered and given to the quality maneuver blue. It is not enough. Why find a Iaquinta. The Juventus fan of collecting a claim rejected short of Moss on the bags and Montolivo 4-3. Closing the accounts. The enchants not italy, but wins. Monday will seriously.

THE LOSERS AGAINST TANZANIA TO PLAYS AGAINST WORLD CHAMPIONS ITALY TODAY IN SOUTH AFRICA

"AZZURRI" ITALIÉ
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"ALL WHITES" NEW ZEALAND
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RUSTENBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

All Whites coach Ricki Herbert believes Thursday morning’s friendly against FIFA World Champions Italy in Pretoria is as exciting for fans as it is testing for the players.

New Zealand take on the Azzurri in their final warm-up for the FIFA Confederations Cup and while Herbert is excited about the proposition, it’s not just because he sees it as an ideal introduction to the levels of skill and intensity New Zealand will face four days later in their tournament opener against world number one Spain.
“For a multiple of reasons it’s great for the game,” Herbert said.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity. It may be mammoth gap between where we’re they are and we’re at but it gives a chance on that world stage to put a good foot forward and I think we can.”
Italy arrived in South Africa on the back of a 3-0 friendly win over Northern Ireland in Pisa and, as the match against New Zealand is the Azzurri’s only warm-up before their Group B opener against the USA, Marcello Lippi may elect to give many of his front liners another hit out.
Like Spain on June 15 (NZT), Italy will field a line-up stacked with the most influential players from Europe’s top clubs but Herbert says that is exactly why fans will get excited.
“One of the important things of getting to this level, is that those sort of things flow into the game.
“Whilst it’ll be great for the players on the pitch to play the best players and the best teams in the world, football fans can switch that on and watch their own team play the likes of [Italy captain] Fabio Cannavaro or [Spain’s Liverpool striker] Fernando Torres or whoever.
“People watch those players week in and week out because they they’re the best players in the world. There’ll be some amazing match-ups and some really intriguing competitions on the park.”
“Kids will love it. They’ll watch and see that opportunities are there in the game and if you can qualify these are the sorts of teams you’re going to come up against.”
The bulk of the New Zealand team has seen game time in friendlies against Tanzania and Botswana but the battle for starting spots has taken on added intensity this week with the 11 named by Herbert against Italy likely to line-up against Spain on June 15 (NZT).
“I think we’re pretty close to settling on a starting 11 out against Italy which would obviously translate into a starting 11 for Spain.
“It’s a tough call. There’s some good depth through the squad. There’ll be some disappointments but that’s the reality of this level of football.”
With just two training sessions left, the biggest selection decision left for the All Whites coaching staff is what role, if any, Ben Sigmund would play.
Herbert had targeted this match for Sigmund’s first taste of game time on tour after recovering from off-season surgery and while the defender’s recovery was on track, decisions on whether Sigmund would play, and if that would be as a starter or from the bench, would be left until the night before the match.
“I think physiologically the full component of where he needs to be from a match fitness point of view is going to be difficult for him,” Herbert said.
“He’s coping with the workload we’ve given him and from a pain perspective he’s kind of got through that barrier now so the signs are positive. We’ve got two sessions before the Italy game and we should be in a position to make that call.
The decision [on whether he starts the game] is based on the team’s needs and if we think it’s in the teams’ interest to start him we will, but we’re probably 24 hours from making that commitment.
The match kicks off at 6.45am New Zealand time with live coverage on Sky Sport 2 from 6.30am.

The scoreboard read 2-1 as teams progressed into the dressing rooms.Africa Invite team which is made up of players from Mozambique, DR Congo, South Africa and Rwanda resumed with a psychological advantage, but this was short-lived when they conceded three quick fire goals in a span of 12 minutes.Youth team coach Rodrigo Stockler resorted to 4-3-3 instead of the initial 4-4-2 playing formation that worked perfectly.Lambere Gerome pulled an equaliser after 48 minutes as the ecstatic boys kept their opponents goal under siege. Adilu Adam scored the third goal four minutes later for the boys to take one goal the lead.Adam scored his second goal after 60 minutes, the fourth for the team that wrapped up the victory. The high-flying Tanzania boys notched their third victory over Malawi early yesterday morning with a lone goal scored by John Kyanturu after 28 minutes. The first half goal lasted throughout as Malawi failed to equalise while throwing overboard many scoring opportunities that came their way. With twelve points comfortably dangling in their hands, the boys are expected to play their final group stage match against Kenya at the same venue this morning. The match would determine classification for their next opponent in the semi finals to be played tomorrow.

New Zealand 1-2 Tanzania

June 4, 2009
AUCKLAND – An early Shane Smeltz penalty wasn’t enough for the All Whites on the start on their pre-Confederations Cup warm-up tour, losing 1-2 to Tanzania in Dar es Salaam on Thursday morning (NZT).
Smeltz converted a 10th minute penalty – his 11th goal in nine starts – to give New Zealand a 1-0 lead they held to half time, but the Taifa Stars equalised ten minutes after the break and grabbed an 89th winner to deny the All Whites a first win on African soil.
New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert handed 17-year-old striker Chris Wood his first international cap, while Tim Brown and Tony Lochhead had both sufficiently recovered from stomach bugs to take their place in the starting line-up for the first of three friendlies before the FIFA Confederations Cup begins.
Full reaction from Dar es Salaam to follow.
